The first handheld mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset which weighed 2 kg.
Motorola released the first commercially available mobile phone, the DynaTAC 8000x, in 1983. In the year 1990, 12.4 million people worldwide had cellular subscriptions.
By the end of 2009, less than 20 years later, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide reached approximately 4.6 billion, 370 times the 1990 number, penetrating the developing economies and reaching to the common man.
India's mobile subscriber base should grow to 950 million by 2014, presently has more than 650 million subscribers.
India is the second-largest wireless market in the world after China.
More than 60% of the population in India now has a mobile phone, and it will reach 80 percent in 2015.
